Once in a Blue Moon...

…dreams can truly come true. I started dreaming about writing and releasing my own fantasy novel when I was in middle school. Back then I was seriously bullied, which is why I often missed my classes and spent most of my time alone. I can't lie that that time period didn't affect me, and if I'm being perfectly honest, I'm still trying to get over from some of the things that happened then. But I got great comfort from somewhat unexpected source: Video games, especially RPGs. Those games offered me safe haven from the horrors outside my room. I was mostly fond of the Final Fantasy series and particularly games FF VII and VIII. I fell in love with those games' deep and rich worlds and fresh and captivating characters, and very very slowly I began to dream of creating something similar. I took my first clumsy steps in my own secret world in form of series of rough sketches. I named my fantasy world Firagaia. The name was inspired by Final Fantasy, as in the series Fira is more powerful fire spell than the basic one, and Gaia was a village in the very first Final Fantasy game. Other than that I wanted my world to be its own unique thing, as were all the different worlds in FF games. My new and exciting project gave me great joy in the middle of that long darkness, and most importantly, it gave me a reasong to go on.

Now 16 years have passed and a lot has happened between that and present time. I finished my middle school which ended too short by all the misery back then, I studied and graduated as graphic designer, I built back my self-esteem by doing modeling and got into photographing at the same time, I worked on other jobs and projects, I got passionated about interior design, fashion, good food and the world around me. Once again I lived, enjoyed, loved and cherished my life and all those wonderful people, that I've been lucky enough to keep by my side. Still not once did Firagaia fully disappear from my thoughts. After graduating I started to write a novel, that later got the name Virvatulet luokseni (Calling of the Nether Flames). Virvatulet luokseni is the first fully fledged tale that take place in Firagaia, and by some miracle I also got a publishing deal for the novel, even though in Finland writing, publishing or reading fantasy novels is on the rare side.

And now, after all these years the gates of Firagaia are opening for others too. I wish you will enjoy your stay, if you decide to take my hand, take a step and enter into my secret world and make it your own.

Joskus unelmista voi tulla totta. Aloin haaveilla oman kirjan kirjoittamisesta ja julkaisemisesta jo ollessani yläasteella. Olin silloin vakavasti koulukiusattu, mistä syystä olin usein poissa koulusta ja vietin muutenkin ison osan ajastani yksin. En voi väittää, etteikö kyseinen ajanjakso olisi ollut minulle vaikea, ja jos ihan totta puhutaan, teen yhä töitä päästäkseni lopullisesti yli kaikista silloin tapahtuneista asioista. Sain kuitenkin valtaisaa lohtua odottamattomalta suunnalta: videopeleistä, etenkin roolipeleistä. Ne tarjosivat minulle turvallisen pakopaikan omilta murheiltani ja kuin taiasta kaikki ne kamaluudet huoneeni ulkopuolella haihtuivat hetkittäin tyystin pois. Final Fantasy pelisarja ja varsinkin sen osat VII ja VIII olivat erityisesti mieleeni. Rakastuin kyseisten pelien rikkaaseen maailmaan ja kiehtoviin hahmoihin, ja hyvin hyvin hiljalleen sisimmässäni syntyi halu luoda jotakin samankaltaista. Kömpelöt ensiaskeleeni omassa salaisessa maailmassani otin piirustusten muodossa. Nimesin fantasiamaailmani Firagaiaksi. Kyseinen nimi oli suora laina Final Fantasy pelisarjasta, sillä Fira on peleissä astetta vahvempi tuliloitsu, ja Gaia taas kylä ensimmäisessä FF-pelissä. Muutoin Firagaiasta oli tarkoitus tulla aivan oma ja uniikki maailmansa, kuten ovat kunkin FF-pelin maailmat. Uusi jännittävä projektini toi minulle suurta iloa sen kaamoksen keskelle, ja mikä tärkeintä, syyn jatkaa eteenpäin.

Siitä kaikesta on jo vierähtänyt nyt 16 vuotta ja paljon on tapahtunut sillä välillä. Vein loppuun teini-iän ahdingoista keskeytyneen peruskoulun, opiskelin graafiseksi suunnittelijaksi, kartutin itsetuntoani mallinhommilla ja innostuin samalla valokuvaamisesta, paiskin töitä, innostuin sisustamisesta, muodista ja hyvästä ruoasta, elin, nautin, rakastin ja iloitsin elämästäni ja kaikista niistä ihanista ihmisistä, jotka olin onnekkaasti saanut pidettyä lähelläni. Missään vaiheessa Firagaia ei silti haihtunut tyystin ajatuksistani. Kuva-artesaaniksi valmistuttuani aloin kirjoittamaan kirjaa, joka sai myöhemmin nimekseen Virvatulet luokseni. Kyseessä on ensimmäinen kookas Firagaiaan sijoittuva kertomus, jolle sain kuin ihmeen kaupalla julkaisusopimuksen, vaikkei Suomessa paljoa fantasiaa edes kirjoiteta, julkaista tai lueta.

Ja nyt, vihdoin ja viimein Firagaian portit ovat avautumassa myös muille. Toivon että tulet viihtymään, mikäli päätät tarttua käteeni, astua kanssani salaiseen maailmaani ja ottaa sen omaksesi.
